    VLBI study of water maser emission in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC5793. I: Imaging blueshifted emission and the parsec-scale jet

    We present the first result of VLBI observations of the blueshifted water maser emission from the type 2 Seyfert galaxy NGC5793, which we combine with new and previous VLBI observations of continuum emission at 1.7, 5.0, 8.4, 15, and 22 GHz. Maser emission was detected earlier in single-dish observations and found to have both red- and blueshifted features relative to the systemic velocity. We could image only the blueshifted emission, which is located 3.6 pc southwest of the 22 GHz continuum peak. The blueshifted emission was found to originate in two clusters that are separated by 0.7 milliarcsecond (0.16 pc). No compact continuum emission was found within 3.6 pc of the maser spot. A compact continuum source showing a marginally inverted spectrum between 1.7 and 5.0 GHz was found 4.2 pc southwest of the maser position. The spectral turnover might be due to synchrotron self-absorption caused by a shock in the jet owing to collision with dense gas, or it might be due to free-free absorption in an ionized screen possibly the inner part of a disk, foreground to the jet. The water maser may be part of a maser disk. If so, it would be rotating in the opposite sense to the highly inclined galactic disk observed in CO emission. We estimate a binding mass within 1 pc of the presumed nucleus to be on the order of 10^7 Msun. Alternatively, the maser emission could result from the amplification of a radio jet by foreground circumnuclear molecular gas. In this case, the high blueshift of the maser emission might mean that the masing region is moving outward away from the molecular gas surrounding an active nucleus.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, to appear in ApJ, Oct. 200

    Sum rules for e+eW+We^+e^- \to W^+W^- helicity amplitudes from BRS invariance

    The BRS invariance of the electroweak gauge theory leads to relationships between amplitudes with external massive gauge bosons and amplitudes where some of these gauge bosons are replaced with their corresponding Nambu-Goldstone bosons. Unlike the equivalence theorem, these identities are exact at all energies. In this paper we discuss such identities which relate the process e+eW+We^+e^- \to W^+W^- to W±χW^\pm\chi^\mp and χ+χ\chi^+\chi^- production. By using a general form-factor decomposition for e+eW+We^+e^- \to W^+W^-, e+eW±χe^+e^- \to W^\pm \chi^\mp and e+eχ+χe^+e^- \to \chi^+\chi^- amplitudes, these identities are expressed as sum rules among scalar form factors. Because these sum rules may be applied order by order in perturbation theory, they provide a powerful test of higher order calculations. By using additional Ward-Takahashi identities we find that the various contributions are divided into separately gauge-invariant subsets, the sum rules applying independently to each subset. After a general discussion of the application of the sum rules we consider the one-loop contributions of scalar-fermions in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model as an illustration.Comment: 37 pages, including 16 figure

    Probing the Weak Boson Sector in γeZe\gamma e\rightarrow Ze

    We study possible deviations from the standard model in the reaction γeZe\gamma e\rightarrow Ze at a 500 GeV e+ee^+e^- collider. As a photon source we use a laser backscattered photon beam. We investigate the most general γZγ\gamma Z\gamma and γZZ\gamma ZZ vertices including operators up to energy-dimension-six which are Lorentz invariant. These vertices require four extra parameters; two are CP-conserving, h1γh^\gamma_1 and h1Zh^Z_1, and two are CP-violating, h2γh^\gamma_2 and h2Zh^Z_2. We present analytical expressions of the helicity amplitudes for the process γeZe\gamma e\rightarrow Ze for arbitrary values of anomalous couplings. Assuming Standard Model values are actually measured we present the allowed region in the (h1γ,h1Zh^\gamma_1,h^Z_1) plane at the 90\% confidence level. We then show how the angular correlation of the ZZ decay products can be used to extract detailed information on the anomalous (especially CP-violating) γZγ\gamma Z\gamma and γZZ\gamma ZZ couplings.Comment: Latex, 25 pages, 12 figures (not included).     Ferrimagnetic spin-1/2 chain of alternating Ising and Heisenberg spins in arbitrarily oriented magnetic field

    The ferrimagnetic spin-1/2 chain composed of alternating Ising and Heisenberg spins in an arbitrarily oriented magnetic field is exactly solved using the spin-rotation transformation and the transfer-matrix method. It is shown that the low-temperature magnetization process depends basically on a spatial orientation of the magnetic field. A sharp stepwise magnetization curve with a marked intermediate plateau, which emerges for the magnetic field applied along the easy-axis direction of the Ising spins, becomes smoother and the intermediate plateau shrinks if the external field is tilted from the easy-axis direction. The magnetization curve of a polycrystalline system is also calculated by performing powder averaging of the derived magnetization formula. The proposed spin-chain model brings an insight into high-field magnetization data of 3d-4f bimetallic polymeric compound Dy(NO_3)(DMSO)_2Cu(opba)(DMSO)_2, which provides an interesting experimental realization of the ferrimagnetic chain composed of two different but regularly alternating spin-1/2 magnetic ions Dy^{3+} and Cu^{2+} that are reasonably approximated by the notion of Ising and Heisenberg spins, respectively.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
